Aftercare

Caring for your new tattoo is important, it ensures the longevity of the piece and that the quality stays like it was on the day that you got it.

I usually apply Derm Shield (a medical adhesive) at the end of the appointment, unless you have a preference for a simple bandage or have an adhesive allergy. Derm Shield (aka Tegaderm, Saniderm or Tatu-derm) is a breathable, plastic, hypoallergenic, waterproof bandage that allows moisture to escape and oxygen to enter for breath-ability. It flexes and moves with the body and protects your clothing and your tattoo in the first few days of the healing process.

Please always wash your hands before and after touching your healing tattoo.

Typically, I will provide you with a second piece of Derm Shield to take home and apply as a replacement for your first bandage. I recommend replacing your bandage around 24 hours after your appointment or sooner if it starts to leak. It is normal for there to be fluid under your derm shield bandage. When replacing your bandage, do not apply any lotion to the tattoo before application. The second bandage should stay on for 2-4 days. If the bandage leaks or feels dry, please immediately remove it in the shower.

Please remove bandages in the shower after a few minutes under the warm water, so that the adhesive has slightly loosened in the heat and humidity. When removing the bandage, pull away gently from a corner rather than peeling back. There is a great video demonstrating the direction to pull the bandage when removing here. Following removal, gently wash the tattoo using your fingers, a mild antibacterial soap and warm water. Rinse well and pat dry with a clean towel. If re-applying, peel off the paper backing and hold the bandage carefully over your tattoo. Center the design so that the bandage covers your tattoo completely, if there is an edge hanging out it won’t work correctly! Carefully place the bandage and remove the clear top backing along the seam with the arrows.

After the Dermshield is removed, you can apply a thin layer of any dye-free, fragrance-free lotion four times per day. I like Eucerin or Lubriderm! Continue the use of lotion until the entire area is healed and scab free.

Avoid sun exposure for the first four weeks. I strongly recommend you use sunblock whenever you’re out in the sun. The way your tattoo looks will reflect the way you take care of your skin.

Do not soak or submerge your tattoo in water until it is fully healed. Showering is okay.

Do not pick or scratch your tattoo. If you’re worried that you’re itching in your sleep, consider wearing loose fitting, breathable clothing to protect it.

Please use common sense, do not listen to any aftercare instructions from anyone besides your tattooer. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
